Offer Free Trade, Not Foreign Aid to Egypt

he U.S. has provided Egypt with over $75 million to date. However, this aid has neither contributed to the strengthening of Egypt’s democracy, nor provided the U.S. with any leverage. Instead, this assistance only served to subsidize Cairo’s inefficient economic policies, and did nothing to prevent decades of oppression under Hosni Mubarak. Despite some increases in economic freedom during the past decade, unemployment, inflation, cronyism and corruption remain widespread. Furthermore, expensive consumer subsidies remained in place under the Mursi and el-Sisi regimes. If Egypt is to finally address its economic problems, it should no longer rely on aid.
